Hoseless dive computers have always been every scuba diver's dream. Why? Freedom. Hoseless dive computers offer users portability, ease of use and most of all, streamlines the diver. What are the downside on a hoseless system then? Loss of signals. A good computer is only as good as your ability to use it. Some computers while, superb in function and built have this inherit problem with signal loss.
The Aeris 750GT is a good example of this. This unit by all means, is a superb dive computer. It has all the functions and features you would want on a dive computer. Dive planner, timers, air integration and etc, but what it lacks, at least with the units that Echo has used, is reliability.
Echo purchased an Aeris 750GT from a LDS with full manufacturer's warranty. In no time, Echo noticed that his 750GT would lose signal more often than he would like, to a point where he started to dive with an extra computer and pressure gauge because of the expected loss of signal from the 750GT.
After several episodes of loss signals, Echo decided to turn it in to the LDS for a replacement which they complied. It took Aeris 2 weeks to send another unit to Echo.
On its first dive, the new 750 presented the same problem, on top of that, the battery indicator started to blink. That is from a unit that Aeris has just sent as a replacement. Back to the LDS we go and a new exchange order is placed with Aeris. Another 2 and half weeks later, a new unit arrived.
By this time, it was Echo's 3rd 750GT in less than 3 months and the unit performed well in about 2 separate dives before the unit presented with its normal signal loss problems. By this time, echo had about enough of this unit and decided not to further pursue with the LDS. He went on to switch to a pressure gauge and a Cochran, which he uses to this date in conjunction with his new Suunto D9.
The signal loss problem with the 750GT is well known within the dive community. Of course not every single unit had the problem but it wasn't an isolated case either.
While the computer is a superb unit, the signal problem just took a toll for us on this product and we have accordingly awarded it with the lowest score in scubadivinguniverse's history.
If you are thinking in picking up a second hand 750GT, make sure you have the warranty.
